Jackie Stewart writes on the art of dressing well

23rd September 2011

Former world motor racing champion Jackie Stewart is almost as well known these days for his prowess in the boardroom as for his mastery on the race track. For many years now he has acted as a business guru, advising company chiefs how to add value to their organisations.

His published autobiography provides some extremely useful insights into how companies, organisations and individuals can improve their performance by following some basic, common sense rules.

As retailers of high quality tailored and casual menswear, you can imagine the team here at Paul Howard were particularly interested in Jackie Stewart’s comments on the importance of dressing well.

To quote from his book: “In any function or business meeting, an individual is still instantly defined by the way he or she dresses. Dress badly and, very often, you won’t get out of the blocks.”

At Paul Howard we have long preached the mantra that “appearance is everything”. In these times where “dressing down” is increasingly being adopted, we are keen advocates that you can still be smart and make the right impression when choosing casual attire.

Jackie Stewart went on to say: “As a racing driver, it didn’t take me long to learn the importance of appearance. If I was the principal guest at a function, I recognised that I would need to be correctly dressed to make the right impression.

“Nobody cares these days, some people might say. ‘Times have changed, Jackie, you’re out of tune.’ Wrong. Fashions change, of course - ties are no longer essential in many offices, although there’s no harm in wearing one because you can always take it off. There are prominent people who seem to delight in ‘dressing down’ but it seldom serves them well.”

Our clientele knows the value of dressing well, which is why Paul Howard is their first port of call - whether visiting online or dropping in to the shop in Marple.

Winning is Not Enough: The Autobiography by Jackie Stewart, published by Headline on October 13, 2007, for £20
